Change that sticks: why our member firms vote on what changes

When private equity buys a firm, the big decisions leave the partners' hands. Linked Accounting Alliance is owned by its member firms, so every change has to earn its place through a vote.

When private equity buys an accounting firm, the big decisions usually move out of the partners' hands. The new owner can set the timeline, swap the software and change how the work gets done, and the partners who built the firm are left to deal with it, often while they are still the ones the clients call.

We hear some version of that story from almost every firm owner we talk to, and it is one of the main reasons Linked Accounting Alliance is built the way it is: as an accounting firm alliance owned by its members.

Who decides in an accounting firm alliance

The Alliance is owned by its member firms rather than outside investors. That one fact shapes almost everything else, because the people deciding what changes are the same partners who will have to live with those changes on a Monday morning in March.

When a firm joins, the partners agree to a short list of shared standards up front, like running on one practice platform. Those are the pieces that make sharing resources possible in the first place, so we are open about them from the first conversation. Past that short list, every change has to earn its place through a vote of the members.

Why that takes longer, and why that's fine

If we want firms to try a new tool, bring in a shared specialist or tighten up a process, we have to show the partners it works and let them decide it's worth doing. That usually means showing it working somewhere first and giving partners real room to push back.

It takes longer than an owner sending down a memo, and we think that is a fair trade. Partners who choose a better process tend to run it well, because they understand why it exists and they have already seen it work somewhere they trust, while a process pushed on people often fails quietly once nobody is watching it.

What it looks like in practice

A few examples of the kind of change that goes through members:

  • Bringing a shared specialist, like a cost segregation or R&D credit team, into a firm's client conversations.
  • Moving a firm's back-office work, like payroll or IT, onto the shared setup.
  • Adopting a new piece of technology across several firms at once.

In each case the question is the same: does this make the firm better for its clients and its people, and do the partners agree? When the answer is yes, the change tends to stick, because the partners chose it themselves.

If you own a firm

Plenty of firm owners want what scale can do for them, like deeper specialists, better technology and a stronger back office, without handing the future of the firm to outside investors. That is exactly the gap the Alliance was built to fill.

If that sounds like your firm, we would be glad to talk.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Linked Accounting Alliance?

Its member firms. The Alliance is a Utah-domiciled LLC governed by a Board of Governors with one partner from each member firm, and that Board oversees the executive team that runs it.

What do firms agree to when they join?

A short list of shared standards that make sharing resources possible, like running on one practice platform. Most production software stays the same, and each firm keeps making its own hiring and compensation decisions.

Do member firms keep running their own firms?

Yes. Each firm keeps its brand, its staff and its client relationships, and the partners keep running it day to day. You can read more in our FAQ.
